May 3rd to 5th - Liverpool dug deep once again to ensure the title race will go to the final day. A Saturday night thriller in Newcastle ended up with Jurgen Klopp's side regaining top spot. Virgil van Dijk opened the scoring with Christian Atsu equalising. Mohamed Salah put the Reds in front again but Salomon Rondon scored a second equaliser for the hosts. With five minutes left, and Man City with one hand on the trophy, Divock Origi, the late goal specialist, headed home a Xherdan Shaqiri free-kick to send the Reds to 94 points and top spot once again. The title picture is simple - two wins for Man City will see them retain their title. Dropped points in either of their games will see Liverpool crowned champions with victory at home to Wolves next Sunday. Me nerves.... The top four battle was pretty much resolved this weekend too. Tottenham are guaranteed a top four finish despite losing at Bournemouth where they ended up with nine men in a one-nil defeat. Chelsea should join them in next season's Champions League after a three-nil win at home to Watford. Arsenal were held to a draw by Brighton - that means they'll either need to win the Europa League or hope for an eight goal swing next weekend to finish in the top four. Man United's top four hopes ended with a one-all draw at relegated Huddersfield. That means United will be in the Europa League next season with their qualifying campaign starting in mid-July with a tie against Finn Harps (probably....) Cardiff's defeat at home to Crystal Palace means a swift return to the Championship for Neil Warnock's side. No Welsh teams in the Premier League also means there'll be no European away trips for Everton next season despite their two-nil win at home to Burnley. The battle for the final potential European spot next season swung in Wolves' favour with a one-nil win at home to Fulham. Leicester need to win at Man City tomorrow night to have any hopes of catching them. I could happily live with that.... The shortest monthly competition of the season opens with Philip Jordan leading the way on 42 points. He's two points clear of Anastas Popov and Damien Martin in joint second place. There are four people a further three points back - Callum Dunne, Jonathan Fox, Sean O'Mairtin and Trevor Byrne. Full details below: |
Keeping the dream alive.... The joy of sixth.... Europa League or bust for Arsenal.... |
May 12th - Man City retained their title following a four-one win at Brighton. Hopes of another miracle in a remarkable week of turnarounds were raised for about eighty seconds when Glenn Murray headed Brighton into the lead. However, goals from Aguero, Laporte, Mahrez and Gundogan sealed a sixth league title for City, their fourth in seven years. Liverpool fell just short with 97 points - the fourth highest points total in the history of the football league. A two-nil win at home to Wolves came as a result of two Sadio Mane goals. The Reds will be hoping to go one better in Madrid on June 1st when they play Tottenham in the Champions League Final. Chelsea drew nil-all at Leicester to clinch third spot. Tottenham were held two-all at home by Everton to complete the top four. Arsenal will have to beat their London rivals in the Europa League final despite a three-one win at Burnley. Pierre-Emerick Aubamayang scored twice in that one to finish the season on 22 league goals and share the Golden Boot with Liverpool's Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. Man United slumped to another defeat - two-nil at home to relegated Cardiff this time to finish in sixth, 32 points off the top and 32 points clear of the relegation zone. Perhaps Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer was given the permanent role a little too soon?? Elsewhere on the final day, Crystal Palace beat Bournemouth five-three at Selhurst Park. Newcastle signed off with a four-nil win at relegated Fulham. Huddersfield picked up a point in their final Premier League games in a one-all draw at Southampton. Watford's FA Cup preparations didn't go too well as they lost four-one at home to West Ham. The final monthly competition of the season was shared by Damien Martin and Phil Doyle with 77 points each. Brian Mullen finished third, just four points back with the top five completed by Anastas Popov and Philip Jordan. Full details below: |
